In healthcare, some of the most impactful organizations work quietly behind the scenes, touching countless lives without widespread recognition. MTF Biologics, led by CEO Joe Yaccarino, is one such organization. Their work in tissue donation and medical biologics represents a profound cycle of hope – where end-of-life decisions become new beginnings for others. As someone who has witnessed the fragility of health through my late husband’s battle with MS, I deeply appreciate how medical innovations can transform lives. But today’s story isn’t about personal loss – it’s about an organization that bridges tragedy and hope, connecting donor families’ selfless decisions with surgical teams delivering life-changing outcomes. From the engineers developing cutting-edge processes to the recipients gaining renewed possibilities, MTF Biologics demonstrates how healthcare innovation can honor one life while healing another. Join us as we explore their remarkable mission and impact.

Are you dreaming of turning your side passion into a thriving business? In this episode of Rooted in Revenue, host Susan Finch sits down with Becky Esquibel, founder of Experience Joy, who’s doing exactly that. As a nuclear medicine technologist by day and travel consultant by choice, Becky shares her remarkable journey of transforming her love for travel planning into a business that’s seen a staggering 1600% growth in just one year. What makes Becky’s story particularly compelling is her practical approach to business growth. Rather than making a risky leap, she’s strategically building her travel consultancy while maintaining her stable hospital position. She opens up about navigating the challenges of a growing client base, the importance of investing in professional services from the start, and how joining a women’s business accelerator program is helping her plan her transition to full-time entrepreneurship.

In 2012, just two days before her 16th birthday, Sunnie Carney lost her father to homicide. Through her personal journey of grief, mental health struggles, and ultimately healing, she discovered a critical gap in support services – one that affected countless children in similar situations. This revelation led her to found Children of Homicide Victims (COHV) in Kansas City, an organization dedicated to restoring hope, love, and faith to children who have lost parents to violence.

COHV serves children from infancy through age 17, with a particular focus on ages 8-16 – a developmental period already complicated by natural growth and change. These children often face misdiagnosis in school settings, where their trauma responses are mistaken for behavioral disorders. What sets COHV apart is its team – 75% of staff members are themselves children of homicide victims. This shared experience creates an authentic connection with the children they serve, showing them living proof that their circumstances don’t define their future. In this powerful conversation, Sunnie shares success stories of transformation, discusses the unique challenges faced by grandparents suddenly thrust into primary caregiver roles, and explains how COHV is working to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Her work reminds us that while we cannot prevent every tragedy, we can create communities of support that help children not just survive their loss, but emerge as future leaders and agents of positive change.

Fr. Bill has some reminders for us as this holiday season ramps up. “The lesson that Advent holds out to all of us, in the midst of all the purchasing, planning, and frantic activity around us, is patience. Trusting that when life doesn’t look the way we think it should look, God is still in control. Remember: some things can’t be rushed. God has a plan, and if we open our lives to Him and let Him work, He’ll get us where we need to be – even if He doesn’t do it the way we would do it. Advent means remembering how to wait.”
