We edit so many shows. We have seasoned hosts, new hosts, seasoned guests, and first-time guests. They each bring their speech patterns along with their knowledge and expertise. A common occurrence is someone who trails off with the final words in a sentence. This can be a problem for the host or the audience because those final three to four words in a sentence often give us context. They are very important to the rest of the sentence. We also do our best to determine what was supposed to be there – what’s missing? As listeners, we miss what comes next when we are distracted trying to fill in the previous missing words.

If your episodes are created to guide and inspire, those final words can make the difference between a valuable episode versus a boring episode that people tune out because of frustration trying to listen to the message. If you are a comedian, those final words are the punchline – the gold at the end.  You wouldn’t drop the gold, would you?

To see if you have this pattern, listen to yourself, record yourself reading some copy.

Here’s a great test to record. Be cautious of the ends of sentences:

Ask your editor to look at the pattern in the recording.

If you see this pattern with a strong start and a fading end, you may be dropping your words. Making this adjustment can result in more listens, and more people talking about your show as a valued resource of knowledge or entertainment.

Try it again. If you want help to break this habit, we coach hosts and guests, as well as produce shows.
